December News

Gatekeepers class have been busy making Christmas decorations using recyclable and upcycled materials. We hope you are inspired by them!

We have been very busy this term doing outstanding things. One of our members has written an article for the NIB magazine and we received a lovely letter from a lady who used to go to the old school in the 1950s. Two members are trying to influence change at a national level and have been writing a letter to King Charles. At lunch times we have been composting leftover food to make our own compost and giving any other leftovers to Mrs. Ferrier’s chickens! In November, we held a meeting with a representative from NORSE and talked about how to reduce the single use plastic within school packed lunches.  As a result, pasta pots are now served in reusable bowls and the sandwiches and vegetable sticks are served on reusable plates. We have also discussed the possibility of using our school grown produce to create a special lunch in the summer term – watch this space!

We have completed an environmental audit and our areas of focus this year are: Litter, Water and Healthy Living.

Over Christmas we thought you could try our 12 Days of Christmas Eco Challenge! You could try some or all of these ideas:

  1. Reuse your Christmas cards for next years’ labels
  2. Buy only recyclable Christmas paper (no foil!)
  3. Try making your own Christmas crackers
  4. Compost your leftovers!
  5. Make a recyclable Christmas decoration
  6. Reuse your Christmas calendar if you can
  7. Keep your plastic bottles to make bird feeders
  8. Keep your turkey fat for the birds and add seeds!
  9. Replant your Christmas tree if it has roots
  10. Email cards rather than posting them
  11. Buy second hand gifts rather than new eg. From Vinted or charity shops.
  12. Donate out grown Christmas jumpers

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

March 2024: Here are the winners of the Single use plastic lunches competition. Congratulations to them all and a big thank you to all of you. We saw a big reduction in single use plastic across the school.
